Ross Lake, Washington - This is one of those images you have to see in your mind's eye while shooting it. I knew I wanted the clouds to appear somewhat ominous and the landscape below to appear almost tranquil. The cameras we have today just can't capture the range of tones that exist in a scene like this one with the deep shadows of the trees and highlights of the sun behind the clouds. So, what to do? Lock the camera down and shoot multiple exposures which cover the tonal range I wanted. For all the Ansel Adams fans this "digital" technique isn't all that far from how Ansel created his masterpieces of light and shadow.
